What WPM Means, and Why Two Tests Disagree

One word in a typing test means exactly five characters including the space that follows it, which is why WPM measures keystrokes and not vocabulary. A test that reports 60 WPM is reporting 300 characters per minute, whether those characters formed short words or long ones.

The five character word

Counting real words would make every result depend on the passage. Typing "go to the top of the page" is nine keystrokes shorter than typing "administrative" twice, yet the first passage holds six words and the second holds two. The five character convention removes that difference: the unit is fixed, so two people typing different texts can be compared.

The consequence catches people out. A passage full of long technical terms lowers nobody's WPM, because a fourteen letter word simply counts as almost three words. What lowers your figure is punctuation, capital letters and digits, since each shift and each reach off the home row costs time while still counting as one character.

Gross WPM against net WPM

Gross WPM is the raw arithmetic: total characters typed, divided by five, divided by the minutes elapsed. Type 1 500 characters in five minutes and the gross figure is 60.

Net WPM subtracts your mistakes. The usual formula takes one word off the gross figure for every uncorrected error, then divides by the time again, so a five minute test with ten errors left standing loses two words per minute. That difference is the reason a result looks lower here than on a page that quietly reports the gross number and calls it your speed.

Corrections behave differently from errors. A character you fix with backspace still costs the keystrokes and the time, so it drags the figure down through the clock rather than through the error count. This is why typists who hammer backspace often plateau while their accuracy looks excellent.

CPM and KPH, and who asks for them

Three units describe the same activity and appear in different places.

The conversion matters when you meet a requirement written in an unfamiliar unit. An advert asking for 10 000 KPH is asking for roughly 167 characters per minute, which is about 33 WPM. An advert asking for 12 000 KPH wants 40 WPM. Both figures are ordinary for office work, and both sit well below the numbers that circulate as impressive, so a requirement that sounds enormous often turns out to describe an everyday pace. The ten key test covers the numeric variant of the same requirement.

What the clock does to your number

Test length changes the result more than most people expect. A fifteen second run rewards a burst on familiar words and flatters anyone with fast hands. A sixty second run brings in the two things that separate a real working speed from a burst: your recovery after a mistake, and the moment your attention slips near the end.

A test on unfamiliar text behaves differently again. Reading ahead is part of typing speed, so a passage in older or more formal language costs you words per minute even though your fingers are doing the same work. Our own typing test runs on public domain literature for exactly that reason, and the fifteen second mode exists to be compared with fifteen second modes elsewhere, not with your sixty second figure.

Reading your own result honestly

Four questions settle whether a number means anything.

1. Is it gross or net? If the page does not say, assume gross and expect a lower figure elsewhere. 2. How long was the test? Compare like with like, or your progress chart measures nothing. 3. What was the accuracy? A 90 WPM result at 88 per cent accuracy is slower in practice than 70 WPM at 99 per cent, because the document still has to be corrected afterwards. 4. Was the text familiar? Repeating the same passage trains the passage, not the skill.

Accuracy deserves the last word. Every uncorrected error in real work costs a second pass, and every corrected one costs the backspace keystrokes plus the pause that came before them. The average speed figures mean little without an accuracy figure beside them, and moving from 94 to 99 per cent usually lifts net WPM more than any attempt to hurry the hands. If a single key keeps failing rather than a finger, the keyboard test settles whether the switch or the habit is at fault.

The pleasant part is that none of this needs a stopwatch. William Wordsworth published Composed upon Westminster Bridge in 1807, a sonnet about a city standing still at dawn, and its 459 characters carry a colon or a semicolon at the end of almost every line, which makes it a quiet way to watch what punctuation does to your rhythm. If you would rather see what capital letters cost, the Preamble to the United States Constitution from 1787 is one long sentence with a capital on nearly every noun, so the left little finger holds Shift from the first word to the last. The Magna Carta clause on the liberties of the cities, sealed in 1215, is shorter still at 234 characters. The Federal Convention in Philadelphia agreed on the final text on 17 September 1787, and thirty nine of the forty two delegates present signed it. Gouverneur Morris, writing for the Committee of Style, replaced a list of the thirteen states with the three words We the People. This sonnet was printed in Poems, in Two Volumes in 1807, with the date 3 September 1803 in its title. Dorothy Wordsworth's journal places the crossing of the bridge on 31 July 1802, so the printed date is disputed. The 1807 text keeps the older spelling shew, which modern reprints usually change. Wikisource carries that original printing.

King John sealed the charter in a meadow at Runnymede on 15 June 1215, after his barons pressed him to accept written limits. Four copies of the 1215 charter survive, two of them in the British Library.
