How the conversion works
Each character goes back to the key that produced it, and then that same key is read again in the target layout. A on AZERTY sits where Q sits on QWERTY, so letters swap in pairs rather than by some alphabet trick. The Shift and right Alt levels travel the same road, which is why accented letters survive the trip when the target layout knows them.
When this saves you
A borrowed laptop set to French while you write English. A remote session that forces its own layout. A password field that took your presses under the wrong layout and now keeps you out. In all three cases the keys you pressed were right and only the translation was wrong.
Why some characters stay put
A character converts only if the target layout produces it somewhere. The Polish programmer layout builds its nine extra letters with the right Alt key, so the trip to AZERTY works only where AZERTY has a matching place. Anything without a counterpart passes through untouched and gets counted, so you can see how much the conversion left behind.
