That floats on high o'er Vales and Hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd
A host of dancing Daffodills;
Along the Lake, beneath the trees,

The waves beside them danced, but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee:—
A Poet could not but be gay
In such a laughing company:
I gaz'd—and gaz'd—but little thought

It grew out of a walk beside Ullswater on 15 April 1802 with his sister Dorothy, whose journal describes the flowers. The 1807 version has three stanzas, and the stanza beginning Continuous as the stars was added in 1815. This text follows the 1807 printing on Wikisource.
